The Repository asks what southerners propose to do about this question. Do Marylanders hope do drive free blacks into adjacent states? The Repository concludes that "If the citizens of Maryland had resolved to drive out their surplus population, of this wretched portion of mankind, Pennsylvania would have been compoelled to rise and prevent them swarming upon our free soil. We will not object to receiving 80,000 of hardy, honest, industrious white men, but we want no more negroes than we now have. What right have you to perpetrate a nuisance upon your neighbors?"
