First week.

Com. vs. George Benner.--Murder, on oath of Otis Nicodemus, et. al. A true bill. Verdict not guilty.

Com. vs. Louisa Cayman.--Assault and Battery, on oath of Caroline Johnson. A true bill. Verdict guilty. Sentenced to pay a fine $1 and costs.

Com. vs. Geo. Geotman.--Assault and Battery, on oath of Rachel Goetman. A true bill. Verdict guilty, and sentenced to pay a fine of 1 cent and costs, and to give security in the sum of $100 to keep the peace toward all good citizens, and especially Rachel Goetman.

Com. vs. Louisa Cayman--Disturbing Religious Meeting, on oath of William Grant. A true bill. Verdict not guilty, and that the prosecutor pay one-half the costs and defendant the other half.

Com. vs. Robert Harman--Desertion of his wife, on oath of Mary V. Harman. Verdict guilty, and sentenced to pay the costs and to pay said Mary V. Harman, his wife, $4 per month, and to be in custody of the Sheriff until this sentence is complied with.

Com. vs. Isaac Gates, alias Webster--Surety of the Peace, on oath of Fred'k Myers. Case heard and each party sentenced to pay half the costs.

Com. vs. William M'Kane--Assault and Battery, on oath of Maria Verner. A true bill. Verdict not guilty.

Com. vs John Fulton--Larceny, on oath of T. E. Paxton. A true bill. Plead guilty, and sentenced to pay a fine of one cent and to be impsisoned in county jail one month.

In same fifteen cases nol. pros. were entered, and a great many continued till April.

Summary: Mrs. Susan Everett, M. D., a graduate of the Women's Medical College of Philadelphia, is giving a series of lectures to the ladies of Chambersburg in the lecture room of the Lutheran Church. Her lectures are very popular, and the ladies of the town are making arrangements for everyone to have the opportunity to hear them.

How Our Laws Are Not Observed

Summary: "Justice" complains that many laws, especially game laws, are not enforced or obeyed. He specifically points out prohibitions against fishing in the Conococheague with nets. He hopes that the law may be enforced and some examples made. At present, they seem only to "benefit a certain class who are too poor to pay a fine, and so mean that the jail has no terrors for them."

Summary: The physicians of Franklin County met to organize a medical society and elect officers. "The object of the association is to promote the cause of medical science, diffuse knowledge, and establish friendly social relations among its members."
