The Public Debt and the Funding Bill

Summary: The paper praises the adminstration for managing the budget and reducing the debt without raising taxes.
The Duty on Coal
(Column 02)
Summary: An attempt made by New Englanders and free traders to lower duties on coal failed. "The vote by which the Senate refuses to reduce the duty was a vote in the interest of the laborer as much as in that of the capitalist, and proves in this department of productive industry what is true in all, that the real interests of labor and capital are harmonious and not antagonistic."

Sudden Death

Summary: Cornelius Louderbaugh, "an estimable and enterprising citizen of Mercersburg, died suddenly on June 28th. He died from a spell of apoplexy brought on by extreme heat while watching workers in his wheat field. "Mr. Louderbaugh was an old citizen of Mercersburg, highly beloved and respected, and for many years engaged in manufacturing carriages in which occupation he acquired considerable wealth."

Summary: The Waynesboro Mutual Fire Insurance Company has organized with the following officers: W. S. Amberson, president; Simon Leckrone, vice president; Joseph Douglas, secretary; Joseph W. Miller, treasurer. These prominent citizens will promote stability in the company. "The risks taken at the home office within the last few weeks amounted to nearly one hundred thousand dollars, indicating a high degree of confidence among the people of their immediate neighborhood."
