Republican County Convention

Summary: This article notes an upcoming Republican nominating convention and also lists results from the 1868 election.

Full Text of Article:

In compliance with the resolutions of the Republican County Committee, adopted at their meeting held in Chambersburg, on the 4th of June, 1870, the County Nominating Convention will assemble in the Court House, in Chambersburg on Tuesday, the 2d of August, 1870 at 11 o'clock, A. M. The Primary Meetings for the election of Delegates will be held at the usual places, on the Saturday preceding - 30th of July, 1870.

The following is the representation of the several districts, upon the basis of the Republican vote of 1868:

County Convention

Summary: The paper announces that the Republican County Convention will meet on July 30th. The editors urge unity, high turnout, and nomination of a strong ticket. They assert that Republicans can win the election since Franklin a Republican majority whose ranks have been strenthened by the 15th Amendemnt.

Summary: The paper asserts that widespread support among Republicans, and widespread condemnation among Democrats, commends John Cessna to the voters.

Feather Renovating Machine
(Column 02)

Summary: Correspondents of the Mercersburg Journal visited the farm of Adam Fahrney to view the feather renovating machine for which he has purchased the patent rights for Franklin County. The machine allows people to clean old feathers in feather beds.

Bridge Contract
(Column 02)

Summary: John Aegle received the contract for the stonework for the new bridge at Roxbury for 2.37 per perch. Gilbert and Co. received the contract for the iron work at $19.40 per foot. The othe rbids for the stonewrok follow: S. Flickinger, $5.40; Henry Kurtz, $4.50; William Forbes, $4.79; O. M. Shoemaker, $3.19; Henry Shearer, $2.65; Greday and Quigley, $4.49. For stonework: T. B. Wood and Co., $19.50; Gilbert and Co., $19.40; Z. King and Son of Cleveland, $16.00. The editors wonder why the contract was not let to King and Son.

Summary: The paper mocks an article in the Valley Spirit for hypocrisy. It denounces John Cessna because he left the Democratic Party to join the Republicans, but praises W. M'Lellan for leaving the Republicans to join the Democrats.

Bitten by a Copperhead

Summary: A young lady named Mary Besser was bitten by a copperhead at Franklin Furnace in St. Thomas. She was taking potatoes from a bin in the cellar of Mr. Royer's house when the snake struck. She is in good condition under the care of Dr. Van Tries.

Summary: A German man named Steinke was found lying unconscious on the street accross from Boyd's Hotel on Friday. He was brought to the hospital and placed under the care of Dr. Langbeine, but could not be revived and passed away. Steinke was 30 years old and had been working on the harvest in Cumberland County before growing ill and making his way to Chambersburg.

Large Sail of Montain Land
(Column 03)

Summary: Judge Kimmell sold a tract of mountain land on behalf of the heirs of the late Mrs. Louisiana Bowers of Warren. The 3,600 acres contain valuable stands of timber. H. T. Snyder purchased the property in order to harvest bark for his tan yard. The land is convenient to the Southern Pennsylvania Railroad and promises to enhance the value of Snyder's tannery since he will have a "nearly inexhaustable supply of first-rate bark."

Fire
(Column 03)

Summary: A fire broke out at the stables in Geiser that consumed the corn, oats, hay, buggies, and harness stored there. Horses belonging to Daniel Hoover and Abraham E. Price also perished. The damage is estimated at $1,600 to $2,000.
