Summary: Steam mill recently built near Freight Depot. Expected to increase commerce and trade in the region. Includes physical description of mill and estimates of production capacity.

Album of Viriginia

Summary: Mrs. Beyer, wife of Ed. Beyer, visited newspaper office during the previous week to solicit subscriptions to the third and fourth volumes of her Album of Virginia. Album includes either photographs or some of form of representation of local views and natural objects.

Gas
(Column 3)

Summary: Repeated rumors that Staunton will have gas lighting have proven to be unfounded. This will hurt the city, since a growing number of Americans are becoming used to gas lighting, and would be unlikely to move to a city that does not have it.

Mortality in Staunton
(Column 3)

Summary: Record book at Thornrose Cemetary reports fifty-three deaths in Staunton during 1858 through August 5. Twenty-seven of the dead were white, while twenty-six were black. White deaths included thirteen infants and fourteen adults. No figures on breakdown of black deaths.

Fire in Staunton
(Column 3)

Summary: A fire on 8/6/1858 destroyed two stables located on the allye below the Central Bank. Stables owned by Messers Staples, Martin & Co., and by Mrs. McCarty. Fire originated in Mrs. McCarty's stable, probably by accident. Two horses were rescued from the Staples, Martin & Co. stable.

Proceedings of the Town Council

Summary: Staunton Town Council met on 8/7/1858, adopting resolution instructing street commissioners to lay pavement from Water Street to the town limits. $100 appropriated for project. Second resolution appropriated $390 (??) to purchase a lot and built a fire engine house.
