Cowhiding of Geo. Rye, J. P.

Summary: George Rye, Justice of the Peace in Woodstock, was cowhided by members of his community after he posted a notice which they believed slandered some "ladies." Rye's notice was intended to stop demonstrations by "rebel sympathizers," including "young women" who were "sometimes strumpeting the streets, singing rebel songs, and making insulting remarks."
