Summary: A group of Gypsies "made a raid on Staunton" and have set up encampments around the town. "There are quite a number of them, of both sexes, and all sizes and colors. They created considerable stir on the streets, as this is the first visit we have had from this class of 'carpet-baggers' for a number of years."

The Catholic Fair

Summary: The Catholic Fair in Staunton was a great success. The church raised between $800 and $900 toward rebuilding the school rooms of St. Francis Church, which had been destroyed by fire. The "every ticket a prize" policy was wildly popular.

Summary: Mr. Amos Crosby died at his residence near Spring Hill on August 30th. He was 83 years old. "For more than 40 years the deceased was a member of the Methodist Church. He did much for the cause of his divine Master and the church of his choice, but the toilsome strife is over."
