Dorcas Society

Summary: A Dorcas Society for the relief of the poor has been established in Chambersburg. Mrs. George A. Miller is president and Mrs. J. L. Suesserott, vice president. Donations can be dropped off at the home of B. F. Nead. "The poor of our Borough are not few, and they stand in need of all that our benevolent people are willing to give. Some of them are deserving, others are not. But common humanity requires that we shall not allow either the deserving or the undeserving to starve or freeze."

Congregation Suffocated

Full Text of Article:

The following causes were disposed of at the Special Court last week, Judge Rowe presiding:

Jno. Rutherauff and B. F. Winger, Assignees of Samuel Fisher, vs. Andrew Baker and David Eshelman. Action in assumpsit on promissory note for $170. Eshelman defended on the ground that he was the surety of Baker and at the maturity of the note gave plaintiff notice to make the money or release him as surety. Verdict for defendant.

Helser vs. Schlosser and wife. Scire facias on mortgage for $1,500. Defendant's alleged that payments were made for which they received no credit. Verdict for plaintiff, $1,531.53.

Huber vs. Rowden. Foreign attachment in debt on articles of agreement. The plaintiff sold defendant the good will and fixtures of a restaurant in Hagerstown, Md., for $2,500. Defendant alleged that plaintiff after agreeing not to go in the same business in Hagerstown, set up a restaurant within a square of the one sold to defendant. Verdict for plaintiff, $2,886.

Bachman, Stoner & Herr vs. Eby. Appeal by defendants from the judgment of S. M. Armstrong, Esq., in favor of plaintiffs for $87.37. This was an action brought to recover the price of a grain drill sold by plaintiffs to defendant. The defence was that the drill failed to perform as warranted. Verdict for defendant.

Kurtz vs. Kreps. Scire Facias on mortgage for $3920. In 1866 plaintiff sold to Mrs. Kreps, the def't, the good will and fixtures of the States Union Hotel in Harrisburg for $7500. The defence was that the sale was fraudulent and that the property was far less valuable than represented by the plaintiff. Verdict for plaintiff, $3338.86.

Miley vs. Wade. Ejectment for three acres of land in Quincy township. The plaintiff is the son of Mary Goetz to whom the land in dispute was conveyed by Henry Funk in 1829. Mary Goetz was the step daughter of John Nicholson for whose debt the property was sold by the Sheriff and finally became vested in deft. in 1844. The defendant claimed title by adverse possession of 21 years. Verdict for defendant.

Guyer vs. Metal twp. Assumpsit for work and labor done in repairing a road in Metal twp. Verdict for plaintiff, $130.80.

Brewer vs. Keller et al. Appeal from judgment of Wm. Auld, Esq. Settled by parties.

Wallich vs. Guyer and Hyssong. Defendants confessed judgment for $52.56 and costs.

Newman vs. Adams. Judgment confessed by defendant for $82.33 and costs.

Zeigler vs. Rhoads and wife. Slander--settled by parties.

The remaining causes on the list were continued.
