Michael Reid Hanger was born in Staunton, Virginia, on May 10, 1840. He worked as a carpenter in Lexington, Virginia, in 1860, and enlisted there in the "Rockbridge Rifles" on April 18, 1861, in response to Governor John Letcher's call for volunteers to defend Virginia. During the war the Rifles became part of the 4th and 5th Virginia Infantry. |
