Augusta County: Samuel Franklin Carson to Capt.
Byers, Aug 7th 1863
Summary:
This is a request from Carson to his commander explaining that a private who was
a paid substitute for another man has now passed his contractual time and so the
other man must be conscripted so that the substitute can be released from
service.
Capt. Byers

Camp near Orange C. H.
Dr. Sir.
Private William A. Buchanan of Company D 5th Virginia Infantry who entered the service on the 31st day of March 1862 as a substitute for B. F. Via for the term of one, (Agreeable to an article of agreement which said Buchanan now holds) is entitled to a discharge, the term for which said Buchanan substituted for, having expired. It is therefore necessary that the aforesaid B.F. Via, be conscripted (unless he has other papers exempting him) before said Buchanan can be properly discharged from the service. B.F. Respectfully returned with

in for the war and that [illeg.] Via ought to
be exempt. If however, the enclosed paper is not satisfactory will forward
