Freedmen's Bureau Records: John A. McDonnell to Roswell Waldo, December 22, 1868

Summary:
McDonnell instructs Waldo on whom to consult about his duties as Registering Officer, a position he will presumably assume once his commission with the Bureau has ended.

Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands
Head Quarters 9th Sub District Virginia R. Waldo
Assistant Sub Assistant Commissioner
Staunton, Virgniia

December 22d/68

Winchester,

Sir

In reply to your letter 21st inst., I take the earliest moment to inform you I have no control whatever over the subject of your duties as Registering Officer.

It will be necessary for you to apply to General Stoneman or the Superintendent of Registration and Election, for the Divison in which your Counties are situated, for instructions.

If you desire to learn before such instructions arrive, it would be perfectly proper for you to transfer the articles to any of the County Registering officers, notifying the proper Headquarters of your action.

Very Respectfully,
Your Obedient Servant

John A. McDonnell
Sub Assistant Commissioner
