Camp of the 54th Mass Vols

Dear sister

I receive your letter dated may the 15th your kind letter found us all well I hope this letter will find you all well

we are garrisons two fort now we are drilling on large cannons now we aint doing much of anything now [unclear: thay] are a great many men getting their Discharges out of our Regiment James Krunkleton and David is about to get their discharge but I dont want no Discharge until the Regiment is all disbanded I want to stay with the old Regiment As long as she is together I come away from Massachusetts with it and I want to go back with it to march through the city of Massachusetts again After our old stars and stripes she is all riddle into strings just to look at it any body can tell what we have been doing we fought hard a many A time for them

I think that we will be home again new year they are some talk of us getting home again the fourth day of July but I don't now how that is it may be so and again it may not I think more about getting home now then what I did while the war was going on I think that we will get home now before very long they are a great many men that did belong to the Rebel army in Charleston City now it goes very hard with them to give away under us colored soldiers but we knock them out of our way And if thay don't like that we take them up and put them in the Guard house

We just go into the city And take the whole streets just [unclear: fer] to get them to say something out of the way to us so that we can get at them and beat them all the boys send their love to you all give my love to father And Elizaberth and to Mary and tell them that I think that I will see them all before very long they are three men just starting home now out of my Company which got their discharge

give my love to all the enquiring friends and likewise to yourself and to all the girls no more at present still Remain
