my dear
i take my Pen in hand to inform you that i am Well at Present i hope that these few lines may find you the same state of health i Was glad to hear from you and all the rest i that that i Would sit down to tell you what i have seen since i left home i must tell you that there is no place like home but must tell you that I have been very Well treated since i left home i have been in Beaufort and on James island and on [unclear: senct] island and on saint simon's island and on [unclear: forley] island and on morris island and on a great many others but i Don't Do anything but lay about the Camp but i don't stay long in a place i am Just like i Was at home But nothing more at Present But still remain your friend David Demus

my dear i take my Pen to tell you that i am very sorry to tell you that i tried to get my likeness taken but i Could not get [unclear: ate] but i hope that you Will send yours and if you Want anything Why let me know and i Will get it for you if i Can Will Close my letter [unclear: gwood] [unclear: deales] and i have been in a Couple of fight and the lord has spared me to get out safe and i don't think that i Will get in a fight again my head Can't stand any noise yet but if i keep my health till this fight that we will have here i Will be home i Would have got home before now but no soldier Can leave the island now but thank god that i am getting [unclear: Putty] [unclear: stote] again i have a little Pain in my head yet But the doctor says that my Skull is broke in but he says that it Will never heal up again but he says that i must take good care of myself
