Gettysburg,
Dear Sir-
In settling up my account in Philadelphia, the Committee proved to be indebted to me & in part payment the Treasure insisted upon my accepting a draft upon you for fifty Dollars. I did not [unclear: relate] that mode of compensation, as I preferred that the Committee should collect its fund & then pay its creditors.- There was no time to do this, as I was obliged to come home to vote; & I accordingly took the draft-- I today handed it to the Bank here for collection, & hope you will honor it.
Our campaign appears to have been [illeg.], but such a defeat may have need needed to consolidate the party in the State.--A defeat is always one [unclear: portion] the year succeeding a Presidential election.- I left [unclear: Mr. Milnid] in Philadelphia & in [unclear: earlier] cheerful tone [unclear: of mind].
Yours truly
Edward M. McPherson
