"This party has assumed a dangerous and revolting aspect. In 1855, its...mysterious, anti-Republican secrecy, its religious intolerance and hatred of foreigners, were relieved by a profession, however shallow and insincere, of attachment of institutions to the South....But now all this pretension is boldly thrown off, and the whole Virginia Opposition unblushingly avow themselves in favor of a 'coalition' with the Black Republicans of the North."
