Summary: This issue of the Vindicator ends the first six months of publication under the new owner and editor. The editor expresses appreciation to the readers and subscribers and declares the venture "a decided success." He reports that most old subscribers continued their subscriptions and that nearly two hundred new people have subscribed. The editor pledges to continue to "pursue the even tenor of our way."

Summary: A car loaded with government goods burned the night of August 12 in Waynesboro. The cause is unknown. A barn near Hermitage also burned that same night, having been hit by lightening.

Summary: Colonel H. B. Davidson, commandant of the post at Staunton, has been transferred, at his own request, to the field and assigned to duty in Tennessee. Davidson has made many friends in Staunton and will be missed. However, he wanted to return to active duty. Colonel J. Q. A. Nadenboush of the 2nd Virginia Infantry will succeed him.

Summary: The official vote return, by precinct, shows that Doyle won the election for Commonwealth Attorney for Augusta County by a large margin. Cochran received 69 votes, Hendren 65, and Johnson 50, while Doyle received 237.

Summary: The trustees of Augusta Female Seminary announce that the next session will begin October 1 and end June 30. A brief description, terms, and tuition is included.

People of Augusta To Arms! To Arms!
(Column 5)
Summary: This advertisement, signed by M. G. Harman, Benjamin Crawford, C. R. Mason, and W. H. Peyton, calls on the citizens of Augusta to form neighborhood units for the purpose of home defense. Boys from fifteen to eighteen and men from forty-five to sixty, those who have substitutes in the army and those who are exempt, all who can bear arms are called upon to form forty to fifty companies that can then join, in times of need, to form four or five regiments. The women of the county can help by compelling the eligible men to join. The advertisement then lists several instances, including the raids at Wytheville, in which local defense units could have been used.
