The Age

Summary: The editor has learned of a new publication called The Age. He believes that its appearance marks another step in the Confederacy becoming free of Yankee tyranny. The editor wishes it and similar publications much success in cultivating "a healthy literary taste in the Confederacy." The endorsement includes a list of contents of the first issue.
Prisoners
(Column 1)
Summary: Seventy-nine prisoners captured at Williamsport arrived in Staunton on Tuesday.
The Presidents Address to the Army
(Column 2)
Summary: The text of an address by President Davis to the Confederate Army is included here. In his speech, Davis lauded the soldiers of the Confederacy for their sacrifices and assured them that the enemy's upcoming campaign "must, from the exhaustion of his resources born in men and money, be far less formidable than those of the last two years, when unimpared means were used with boundless prodigality."
Editorial Comment: "We copy below the admirable address of the President to the army. It needs no comment but like other articles from his pen will go straight to the hearts of the people."

Obituary

Summary: Jacob H. Keiser, 1st Lieutenant of Company H, 5th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade, died August 1, 1863, near Gettysburg of wounds received in the battle there on July 3. A long obituary eulogizes Keiser as a soldier and a friend.
