Summary: Last Friday, William Robinson, a black man, attempted to rob the store of Hugh Glenn and Co. Two African American men, John J. Christian and Alex Nellons, heard the noise and attempted to stop him. A scuffle ensued in which Christian was struck on the head with a piece of iron. The thief took refuge in a house in Gallowstown where police arrested him after Christian and Nellons stood watch. Robinson was brought before Mayor Allen who committed him to jail until the grand jury could hear his case.
