Summary: William Cochran's barn, located two miles west of Greenville, burned in a fire on Sunday night. He lost 300 bushels of wheat, 75 bushels of corn, a buggy and wagon, and a number of agricultural implements. The damage amounted to between $1,200 and $1,500. The paper blames the fire on a "negro boy" who allegedly entered the barn while smoking a pipe.

New Telegraph Line

Summary: The legislature chartered a company to establish a telegraph line from Alexandria to Harrisonburg and Staunton. Mr. J. E. Norris will be in town to sell stock subscriptions. The line promises to reduce message costs by 50% for Staunton residents, and open communication between the town and the valley. It will also allow Staunton businessmen to monitor markets in Baltimore and Alexandria.

Summary: Prints the preliminary returns from county elections. Indicates the Conservatives won most of the offices by wide margins.

The returns of the election in this county are all in but have not been opened by the canvassers and consequently we are unable to give the official vote. Enough, however, is known to assert the election of all the nominees of the County Conservative Convention, except Chas. T. Cochran nominee for County Treasuer, who is defeated by Paul, independent Conservative. Paul's majority will probably reach 400.

The Congressional returns have not been received from all the Counties of this District. The Counties as far as heard from are reported as giving the following majorities:

FOR HARRIS, CON. NOMINEE

Rockingham 470 Page 546 Warren 230 Frederick 500 Shenandoah 546 Total 2292

FOR REYNOLDS, IND. CONSERVATIVE

Augusta 900 Rockbridge 125 Total 1025

Alleghany, Bath, Highland, Botetourt and Clarke have not been heard from.

The Congressional vote in Rockbridge is as follows: Gray, Rad. 606, Reynolds, Ind. Con., 583, Harris, Con. Nominee, 458.

The entire County Conservative ticket in Rockbridge is elected by a small majority.

The entire Conservative Ticket in Albemarle elected.

In Rockingham the Conservatives elect all the officers save County Clerk, Lewis, son of Senator Lewis, Radical, being elected to that office.

As far as we have heard from the Valley, the Conservatives elect the county officers.
