It is a custom among the colored folks to celebrate the first of August in commemoration of the emancipation of the Slaves in the British West India Islands. The colored population of this and neighboring towns assembled here, on Wednesday last, and put the day through by a grand pic-nic, military parade, and the other fixens of a jollification in such cases made and provided. The Transcript establishment contributed its quota in observance of this grand "'bobolition selbration" by hoisting a flag, or rather a rag, tied on a rail, from one of its port-holes, on which is the picture of a Crow with the name of Abe Lincoln underneath. It was a very fit occasion for the Transcript to show its colors and proclaim its abolition principles.

--Saturday last was the warmest day this summer; the Thermometer at Mr. Heyser's Drug Store stood at 92 degrees in the shade! On the 10th day of July it had reached 90 degrees. Old Sol is laying it on to us poor critters.

--A Calf of the half Teeswater breed, belonging to Mr. John Bittner, of Guilford township, when only two days old, weighed One hundred and seventeen pounds!--Well, if that don't take the Premium at our next Fair, we'll knock under. Guilford can't be beaten. That's so.

--Several of our citizens have, during the past week, complied with the request of the Hook and Ladder Company, and presented their old leather Fire Buckets to the Company. We hope others will have consideration and liberality enough to do likewise.


New Fire Engine

Summary: The Town Council responded to public pressure and agreed to buy a new fire engine. The Council originally opposed this measure, but when a majority of the citizenry agreed to be taxed to pay for the new engine, the Council changed its position.
A Mean Trick

Summary: The Spirit printed bills for the Democratic Douglas Club. When they posted one in a hotel owned by a Republican, the bill was quickly torn down even though the owner had given the Democrats permission to post it.

New Post Office

Summary: Currick Furnace in Franklin County has recently established a new post office with George W. Swank as post master.

--We learn that a new Post Office has been established at Carrick Furnace, this county, and that our old friend, George W. Swank, had the good luck of being appointed Post Master. Well, if George don't suit for that position, we do not know who will.
