Summary: This editorial denounces the arguments of Robert J. Walker asserting that "rebels" and the war which they caused are responsible for the South's economic problems. Instead, there is only one way to restore the South to prosperity: "Restore the Southern States and their people to their rights under the Constitution; make the U.S. Government a permanent one, and keep the negro in his place as a free laborer, protected in all his rights as such." "The Freedmen's Bureau and its excresences, negro superiority and all, must be cut off."
Appointments for 5th District

Summary: The Conservative voters of Augusta have named organizers for the 5th district (Waynesboro'). George A. Bruce orders that each organizer will be responsible for ensuring that a group of ten white voters makes it to the polls. They will also register new voters in their neighborhoods. Bruce directs the voters to the address of Alexander H. H. Stuart and the card of Gen. Kenton Harper for further information.

Contested Seat in the Convention

Summary: Frederick S. Tukey is disputing the results of the election for the Convention by questioning the counting of the ballots cast for James C. Southall. Thomas P. Jackson, head of the Board of Registration for Augusta, filed a report in the matter.

Lecture

Summary: Dr. Trotter will give a series of benefit lectures in the basement of the Methodist Church. He will discuss science and physiology. A. D. Trotter and the Reverends Clark, Baker, and Latane will distribute the proceeds from the 50 cent admissions among the poor.

Summary: The Staunton Lodge No. 13 of Free and accepted Masons issued resolutions of mourning for the death of fellow-member Erasmus Stribling Trout.
