Summary:
During the late spring and early summer of 1862, General Thomas J. Jackson won a
series of important victories over Union troops in the Shenandoah Valley. In
this June letter, Robert E. Lee informs Confederate Secretary of War Randolph of
a telegram from Staunton announcing yet another victory, probably at Cross
Keys.
Hon. GEORGE W. RANDOLPH,
Secretary of War:
June 9, 1862.
SIR:
I received this morning a telegram from Staunton announcing a glorious victory achieved by the gallant Jackson and his troops. If confirmed it will enable him to take the offensive again. Re-enforcements will therefore be important to him. Those you ordered should go on in that event.
Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
R. E. Lee
