Summary:
Union General in Chief Henry Halleck writes Army of the Potomac Commander Ambrose Burnside on January, 1863, operations in western Virginia. He repeats a report of General Benjamin Kelley that a Confederate force might be moving from Staunton to West Virginia.

A body of rebels has appeared at Moorefield, South Branch of the Potomac. It is reported that troops from Richmond have been sent to reenforce Bragg in Tennessee. Doubtful. Gen. Kelley thinks that a force is moving from Staunton into Western Virginia. Very probable.
