From: ROBT. C. SCHENCK, Maj.-Gen.
April 21, 1863

Summary:
Union General Robert Schenck reports to General in Chief Henry Halleck on April, 1863, events in the Shenandoah Valley. Schenck expresses his belief that Confederate forces might advance into West Virginia, and reports the arrival of Jackson's army's baggage in Staunton.

Maj. Gen. H. W. Halleck,
Gen.-in-Chief:

BALTIMORE, MD.,

April 21, 1863

Many circumstances now tend to indicate that the rebels are preparing to make some movement in force in Western Virginia. Gen. Milroy telegraphed to me yesterday that, except some small scattering parties, the enemy had fallen back with all troops as far as Harrisonburg. In a dispatch to-day he says:

From information received, which I deem reliable, the baggage of Jackson's army and some artillery and ordnance stores arrived at Staunton some ten days since.

These things corroborate the reports I get from Gen.'s Scammon and Roberts.

ROBT. C. SCHENCK,
Maj.-Gen.
