From: R. E. LEE, Gen.
January 27, 1863.

Summary:
In this January, 1863, letter, Robert E. Lee writes cavalry general William E. Jones requesting that a cavalry legion be relieved from duty at Staunton and sent to the front.

Brig. Gen. W. E. JONES,
Cmdg. Valley District:

January 27, 1863.

GEN.:

Capt. Long's company, of the Phillips Legion Cavalry, Gen. Hampton's brigade, has been detached from the legion and duty at Staunton for several months. I think it better that it should rejoin the legion, and desire to have another company ordered to Col. H. B. Davidson, if you can spare one without detriment to your to your operations.

If a mounted company is required at Staunton, and you can supply one, please order Capt. Long's company to join Gen. Hampton near Culpeper Court-House.

I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

R. E. LEE,
Gen.
