Summary:
In late April, 1863, the Union Army of the Potomac under Joseph Hooker crossed
the Rappahannock River prior to the battle of Chancellorsville. In this
dispatch, Confederate Adjutant General Samuel Cooper orders General Samuel Jones
to send cavalry forces in western Virginia through Staunton to Lee's aid.

April 29, 1863.
Hasten the cavalry brigade of Gen. Jenkins for Gen. Lee. Gather up as much of that forces as you can immediately, and send them forward, without waiting for others, via Staunton and Gordonsville. The enemy is crossing the Rappahannock at different points in force.
