Union General Darius Couch writes Secretary of War Edwin Stanton in June, 1863, to report two Confederate divisions in Chambersburg. He expresses fear for the safety of the valley.


Secretary of War, Washington:

Harrisburg, Pa.,

June 24, 1863

Rodes and Jenkins were at Chambersburg last night. Have been advancing all day. I shall not at present with my force be able to drive them from the Valley.
