Confederate Assistant Adjutant Charles Stringfellow advises General Samuel Jones of a possible October, 1863, Union advance toward Staunton or other locations in the Valley.

Col. Jackson dispatches Gen. Echols that Averell is about to move in connection with Scammon. Says Averell has 4,000 men. One regiment already moving to Cheat Pass; Staunton or Lewisburg his destination. As Scammon co-operates, I think it must be the latter place. Send me your orders immediately.
