Summary:
Confederate Cavalry General John C. Vaughn reports from Staunton to Robert E. Lee
on the June 5, 1864, battle near Staunton, VA, in which General William E. Jones
lost his life. Vaughn expresses doubt that he can hold Staunton after the
defeat.

Fought the enemy to-day eleven miles from Staunton. Near New Hope now. Have been driven back. I will try to protect Staunton, but unless re-enforcements come at once I cannot do it. May have to fall back by way of Waynesborough. Gen. E. W. Jones killed.
