Summary:
Confederate Colonel Edwin Lee reports to Robert E. Lee on the June 5, 1864, defeat at the battle of Piedmont. Lee expresses his fear that Staunton will fall to the Union army.

STAUNTON,

June 5, 1864.

We have been pretty badly whipped. Gen. W. E. Jones killed. Gen. Vaughn in command. Falling back toward Fishersville. He asks that you hurry the re-enforcements promptly. I fear Staunton will go.
