Summary:
In this letter to General Benjamin F. Kelley, Union General Franz Sigel estimates the number
of Confederate troops in the Staunton area in May, 1864. He asks Crook to operate against
Staunton.
Brig.-Gen. KELLEY,
Cumberland:
Cedar Creek, Va.,
May 18, 1864.
Inform Gen. Crook that Breckinridge has probably concentrated his whole force against me. Echols is here, and there are probably no troops of the enemy between Lewisburg and Staunton.
On the latter place Cedar should operate.
F. SIGEL,
Maj.-Gen.
