Summary:
Union forces briefly occupied Staunton, VA, in early June, 1864. By mid-June, however, they had withdrawn, as evidenced by this letter in which Union General Franz Sigel reports that General David Hunter had found the town occupied by Confederate troops.

MARTINSBURG, W. VA.,

June 18, 1864.
(Received 9.35 a. m. 19th)

The detachment of cavalry sent from Beverly with dispatches to Gen. Hunter found the enemy in possession of Staunton and Lexington. They returned with the dispatches. Another attempt to send the dispatches has been made.
