These June, 1864, Confederate Special Orders put General Edwin Lee in command at Staunton, Virginia. Lee is charged with the town's defense against advancing Federals.

June 3, 1864.

XIII. Col. E. G. Lee, Provisional Army, C. S., in addition to the other duties to which he has recently been assigned, will assume temporary command of the post at Staunton, Va., and will do all in his power to organize the local forces and to aid in the defenses of the Valley.
