Summary:
Union Cavalry officer H. T. McLean reports to Major Schultze with information on Confederate troop strengths gleaned from two deserters in July, 1864. McLean announces his intention to send the Confederate deserters to Chambersburg.

HAGERSTOWN,

July 13, 1864.

Two rebel deserters have just been brought in by my pickets, who left the rebel army south of Frederick Sunday evening, and say that Gen. Early was in command of 35,000 men. He expected to be joined by A. P. Hill at Leesburg and attack Washington. I will send them to Chambersburg.
