In this July, 1864, dispatch, Union General William Averell writes to General Darius Couch, commanding at Chambersburg, to request signal officers with which to set up a station.

HAGERSTOWN, MD.,

July 27, 1864.

If you have two signal officers to spare please send them here. I wish to establish a station at Fairview, and have but one officer. The 100-days' men report enemy crossing at Cherry Run.
