Pennsylvania politician and ex-secretary of war Simon Cameron writes Abraham Lincoln on July 30, 1864, to notify him of the Confederate occupation of Chambersburg.


President A. LINCOLN:

HARRISBURG, PA.,

July 30, 1864.

Rebels entered Chambersburg at 3 o'clock this morning in three columns. This is fifty miles from here. Send us a general fit to command, and we will try to take care of ourselves. Gen. Couch is said to be at Bedford.
