Summary:
Union General Philip Sheridan writes in November, 1864, to General Darius Couch,
commanding at Chambersburg, to warn him of the presence of spies in the
Cumberland Valley. Sheridan instructs Couch to hang any spies he captures.
Maj.-Gen. COUCH, Chambersburg:
November 27, 1864.
There is no danger of a guerrilla raid in the Cumberland Valley. If you have arrested spies, hang them; if you are in doubt, hang them anyway. The sooner such characters are killed off the better it will be for the community.
P. H. SHERIDAN,
Maj.-general.
