Summary:
Jackson reports the case of Betsey Brown, who was originally sold out of Augusta
County, and who has since returned with her three children. Jackson asks for
information about her father, who lives near Winchester, so that he may support
her. McDonnell reports that while Gabriel is able to support his daughter, he is
unable to pay for her transportation to Winchester.

Betsey Brown (col'd) sold from this county some 20 years ago has reached Staunton from Mississippi with three children and her means are exhausted. She is a daughter of Garbriel Brown (col) who is living about four miles from Winchester on the Charlestown road.
Please have enquiry made for Gabriel or he can send money to pay her passage to Winchester or if he is not able I respectfully ask transportation for her and her children as she is penniless

Gabriel Brown, of this place states that he can
support his family, but is now unable to pay their travelling expenses from
Staunton. I therefore respectfully recommend that transportation be provided for
Betsey Brown, and three
children, aged 10, 3 & 2 from Staunton,
Va. to Winchester.
