Freedmen's Bureau Records: Agreement between Samuel Jackson and Robert Miller, December 7, 1867

This contract details the terms of Samuel Jackson's purchase of a horse from Robert Miller with payment installments. Thomas P. Jackson witnessed the contract.


December 7, 1867

Staunton, Va.

I have this day Decr 7/67 bought of Robert Miller one Grey horse for which I hereby agree to pay Forty five 00/00 dollars as follows viz my note at seventeen days from Dec 7/67 for Twenty five dollars and my note at fifty days from Dec 7/67 for Twenty dollars and it is further hereby agreed that until full payment to Robert Miller who assigns of full amount above two notes viz Forty five dollars ownership of said horse remains in Robert Miller, but should said horse die while in my possession I hereby bind myself to pay amount of said notes as if said horse were still alive.

On full payment of said notes say $45 00/00 Robert Miller binds himself to execute to me a clean bill of sale and receipt it for said horse.
