Freedmen's Bureau Records: Lease between Robert G. Bickle and John A. McDonnell, May 20, 1865

Summary:
This lease outlines the terms whereby the Bureau in Staunton will lease a building for use as a school house from George Bickle.


This agreement made this Twentieth day of May 1867 between R.G. Bickle Staunton Augusta County State of Virginia, party of the first part and Capt. John A. McDonnell, V.R.C. Sub Asst Comr 9th Div. Va. for and in behalf of the Bureau R.F. and A.L. party of the second part. Witnesseth that the said party fo the first part agrees upon the terms hereinafter contained to Lease to the said party of the Second part for the use of the Bureau R.F.& A.L. [added: to be used as a school house] from the Twentieth day of May 1867 for one year but but the party of the Second part to be at liberty to terminate this Lease at the end of any month from the date here of the following described premises "Two Story brick house and out buildings with the privilege of water Hydrant and lot of ground on South Side of Lewis Street Gallowstown Staunton Augusta County State of Va and that said John A. McDonnell Captain and S.A.C. for and in behalf of the said Bureau R.F. & A.L. hereby agrees to pay the said R.G. Bickle Twenty five (25) dollars per month for each month from the date here of at its expiration and at the expiration of this Lease to deliver possession of said property to the said party of the first part or his Successor in as good Condition as the same now is, loss by fire or other unavoidable injury and reasonable wear and tear excepted."
