Dear Governor,

Lieut [unclear: Hergent], the bearer [unclear: is] of Battery D, 2nd Pa Artillery is from this county, and an intelligent efficient & reliable officer. Over two hundred men have been [unclear: recruit] from this county by him and others for the regiment: there is but one commissioned officer from the county, while [deleted: ] [unclear: vacancies] exist & have existed for some time ought [illeg.] [illeg.] with the Colonel [illeg.] are informed.

I wish to say that Lieut [unclear: Hergent] is in all respects a soldier & [unclear: credible], and he would be glad to make some

statements relative to the [unclear: aggregation], in asmuch as the Colonel does not serve as a medium for the [unclear: fanfare].

You cannot err in giving credit to his representations. It is certainly due our county to have some companies.
