My dear Sir
Your sending a check of $20 for one Band, has been recd.- I'm [unclear: sure] men will be delighted to hear of your contribution, for they are anxious to purchase the instruments, & have encountered many obstacles.- They will accept this gratefully, as renewed evidence of your liberality & your interest in the cause which so [unclear: namely] enlists their sympathies. The [unclear: horns] are to be held by the [unclear: com &c] named, & we hope the Band will have a prosperous future.-- It will be a help, in our contests for the primary in this county.
I did not know until the other day, that the gentlemen had written [unclear: it
on] (for I have been much from home) & [unclear: if I]
can find something to occupy me, I will [illeg.] the [illeg.] in
[illeg.] probably; but I can't "loaf" all that time. My nature
[unclear: relates] I am happiest when busiest.

understand how numerous must be the caller upon you.
I do not expect to reach Washington until Jan 4-probably about the middle.- I wish to be [illeg.] [illeg.] at the opening, to serve [unclear: especially] a very deserving county man, John Picking, [unclear: Viz.], who is a candidate for [unclear: transcribing] clerk. [unclear: I doubt] there are a legion of candidates.
There should be a committee of [illeg.] raised to examine into Buchanan's case.--On [illeg.] [illeg.] in disgracing the State.--All true State men Should write to make a better Pennsylvanian the next Prest, if for no other reason, to show the nation that our people are not all bereft of Common Sense.
