My Dear
Sir,
In the crisis now upon us be true to the Union.
You are aware of my position politically; but in my esteem you were second, in the late contest, to no man in your party.
Our Union was gained at immense sacrifice, and should not be cast to the winds as a bubble. Do not permit personal aspirations or friendships to control you; but give your whole energies for your country united and indivisible.
Any documents to my address under your frank would be regarded by me as evidences of Friendship in the past and continued.
Keep me in remembrance as a personal friend and believe me
