The Valley of the Shadow

Matthew Pilson

Matthew Pilson farmed in Augusta County, Virginia, before the war. According to the 1860 Census, Pilson lived in a large household with his relatives, probably his wife and children. The 1860 Slaveowner Census lists Matthew Pilson as the owner of eleven slaves. He remained a wealthy man after the war, and his household included both white and black members.
