Letters and Diaries
Letters & Diaries: This section contains all the wartime letters and diaries in the Valley Archive. You may explore the part on either Augusta or Franklin. Both sections contain a page that gives a brief description of each collection of personal papers, so you may scan through the collections for what looks most interesting or useful. You may also search the letters and diaries, to find a particular word, phrase, or name. More about the Letters & Diaries.
Newspapers
Newspapers: This section contains transcriptions and images of the newspapers from Augusta and Franklin, providing access to how news was reported in the counties. You may browse the individual newspapers by date, read articles grouped by relevant topics, or search the newspapers for particular words or phrases. In most cases, you may also view scanned images of the original newspaper pages. More about the Newspapers.
Soldiers Records
Soldiers' Records: This section contains all the official military records kept by the United States and Confederate governments on soldiers from Augusta and Franklin counties which the Valley Project could locate. These records often contain detailed notes about service, wounds sustained, and desertion. You may search this database by name, enlistment date or age, regiment, or many other fields. Official Records
Official Records: This section contains all the wartime records concerning military units from Augusta and Franklin counties that were published in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion. Comprising approximately 1,500 records, this database may be searched for either Augusta or Franklin units. Additionally, you may search by author or browse the records by year. Battle Maps
Battle Maps: This section contains animated battles maps of the experiences of Augusta and Franklin units during the war. Each major battle they fought in is linked to the Records of Events database which provides detailed information on that unit's experience there. The interactive map also details the such things as the locations of historical roads, historical railroads, historical town, and the place of modern cities and highways. More about the Battle Maps.
Images
Images: This section contains a searchable database of over 700 photographs and magazine illustrations from the Civil War. You can use this search page to find photographs of soldiers from Augusta and Franklin Counties, scenes from battles that Augusta and Franklin units fought in, or magazine illustrations of the homefront or camp life. The database also contains a large collection of photographs and magazine illustrations of African American soldiers and civilians during the Civil War years.
Reference Center
Reference Center: This section contains helpful tools for examining the Valley Archive. Here you will find the Valley Timelines, which give a basic chronology of events in the two counties. You may also use the Search the Valley Databases page, which gives you access to every search engine available in the Valley Archive. You will also find the Valley Bibliography, which details all the sources we consulted in constructing the Valley Project.
