The Valley of the Shadow

Long Family

Before the war, siblings James Franklin Long, Andrew Davidson Long, and Cynthia Long lived on a farm in Augusta County, Virginia. During the war, Andrew and James both served in the Confederate military. James enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry on March 7, 1862. He died in Newtown in 1864. Andrew enlisted in the 5th Virginia Infantry just days after his brother on March 14, 1862. He was wounded in battle and was hospitalized, eventually returning home on furlough in 1865. After the war, Andrew apparently moved to Rockbridge County where he married in 1871.
