Franklin County: Augustus Hover to His Mother, April 20, 1863

Hover tells his mother about his marching orders and about how he has to carry eight days of rations. He also mentions a portrait of himself and says that he is sending money home.

Camp near Bell Plane landing Virginia

Dear Mother

i take my pen in hand to inform you that i am well at this present time and hope that these few lines will find you all in the same state of good health. We are in our old camp yet But i dont know how long we will stay here for we are under marching orders now and can't tell what day we will have to march we had very nice weather here for the last few days and when we do march we have eight days [unclear: rations ] to convoy on our backs We will have about forty five or fifty pounds to convey on our backs You wanted my likeness and i had a chance to get it taken the other day and i got it taken and now i send it to you and ten dollars with it and i want you to send Me twenty five cents worth of post stamps if you can get them you can use the ten dollars if you want to I must bring my letter to a close for the present time. nothing more at present time. But write soon and let me know whether you got the likeness and money or not.
