Dear sister

i take my pen in hand to inform to you that i well at present and all the rest of us but Jacob he is wounded in the arm We were on saint James island on the 16 of July the rebel [unclear: advds] on our tickets [unclear: Cefrdlight] we all arose and formed a line the artillery opened fire on them and drove them back we left the island that night and on the 18 of July we landed on morris island and We made a charge on Fort Wagner We lost a great many men the rebels Was too hard for us Jacob Christy was wounded and [unclear: tomed] [unclear: Curtches] [unclear: hes watchen sirers cruelten] was killed and all the rest of them was wounded David Demus was wounded tomes stoner robert lines is amongst the missing i harisson gorge Demes gorge Cavosek was not hurt we are about five miles from Charleston our men are living on the island i don't know how so they will make an attack on them it is very hot where we are we have be over [unclear: agrate] and saw [unclear: agrate] deal of the country i have saw more then i ever expected to see before i left home i have got through this time i was struck on the best plate with a ball and that was all that save me it was through gods will that the ball struck the plate if i live to get home i will fetch the plate home with me if i can i thought that the people had all left pennsylvania i [unclear: ever] not hear anything from anyone wood like to hire from John i got a letter from James o carson the 2 of august i sent the money to him to go to my father and when he wrote he wrote that he had the five dollars that i sent and he would give it to as soon as he got an opportunity to give it to him he would give it to him tell him to pay Clark 62 1/2 ct and then he can keep the rest in the place where we are now it is hard to paper envelopes and stamps i heard that the Colored folks were going to [illeg.] my words come true just as i said before i left that the rebels would come in and take all the Colored peoples that they could get and take them this is all i have at present we are at morris island now but i dont know how long we may be there please write soon and let me know how the times is
